Project Stealth Fortuner: Design Story

The Toyota Fortuner with its butch proportions provides a very strong SUV base to start with. The client wanted to go with a stealth black look in order to reinforce the strong attitude of the vehicle.

A stealth design usually means All Black and Everything Black!.
However for a car like Fortuner that doesn't have any sharp lines running through, an all Black Design would have simply reduced it to a huge lump of All Black.
We usually star every design project with an Inspiration Image Board, which helps us to decide a final design theme for the vehicle.

Keeping in mind the client’s profile (lifestyle, inputs, likes/dislikes,etc.), we formulated a final theme to go with the car. We started with a Satin Matte Black wrap for the as the base. Combinations of Gloss Black and Textured (Carbon Fibre) Black elements have been carefully incorporated to break the monotonous overall diffused design. Finally subtle colour highlights have been added to bring a bit of life to the overall design.

Details

The Wheel Arches are finished in gloss black to give some visual width to the vehicle. Gloss Black front and rear bumper skid plates break the bulky volume of the bumpers
Taking forward the stealth theme, the hood has a subtle FORTUNER branded Racing Stripe in gloss black finish with the letters cut in matte black.

The Roof Rails are finished in gloss black while the roof is itself wrapped in satin matte black. On the roof, the ribs feature an interesting design motif finished partly in gloss black and partly in textured carbon fibre black. The Red accent on the last roof rib adds a bit of quirkiness to the design.

The Front Grille trim is finished in textured carbon fibre finish. Thin red pin-stripes along the front of the grille help in adding a visual width and at the same time provides more character to the overall front fascia.

The driver side ORVM continues the theme with a (Trademark BarCode) design motif in gloss black finish over matte black base with a subtle horizontal red accent.
The rear features a textured carbon fibre wrapped boot garnish trim similar to the front grille while smoked tail-lamps complete the stealth theme.

The Door Handles are again wrapped in matte black with a horizontal band of gloss black running through the middle. The drivers side door handle smartly integrates the IDE branding within the gloss black horizontal band. This combination of Matte and Gloss makes the branding hidden and is only visible on exposure to direct light. A unique solution for Stealth Branding!

The overall combination of Gloss over Matte gives a unique look to the overall car. With carefully thought-out details & colour highlights, the final outcome is a strong and powerful look to a vehicle that had the lines and volume but just needed a strong theme to make it stand out from the crowd.
